Oh how the weather gods have shown off over the past few weeks. I should seriously be working 5-10knt roster.
Over the past few months we had been fishing the Mackay Tournament Anglers Sooty series with not much good weather to get out wide for a bit of fun, But… It has been a different story the past few weekends starting with the annual game fishing spanish mackerel comp.
And so…We left the Marina at 4:50 and gunned it out to our first spot. I tied on a sebile stick shad 182 onto my trusty popping rod and lobbed a massive cast over the pressured edge, two twitches later and it was on. A pack of medium sized Gts were chasing it down like a pack of thugs – hooked up and brought in the first pup of a 10kilo GT.
We circled around again and on the second cast my sebile got drilled from the right. Quicksmart we had a nice 8 or so kilo barracuda in the boat. This was going to be a good weekend.
We continued to pop and work our lures for another half hour, we decided to have a sneaky cast at lesser spot and bang as the sun peaked its head over the horizon it was on dad.. A revved up 23kilo guy climbed on Justin’s popper. This guy gave an awesome fight. A few happy snaps later and she swam free.
We continued to fish and switched to light tackle and caught a good haul of coral trout.
An hour later we started popping again over the next 45min we had 6 solid strikes from angry GTs but no hookups. So we decided to move areas.
First cast on the new spot and I got drilled by another 23kilo fish. This fish dragged me all around the boat, with at least one occasion me almost going overboard. Finally got her to the net. There is something about these fish in heavy current, they generate ridiculous power. I was sweating beads, But stoked with it.
We moved spots once again and pulled into a favored area where we catch lots of trout on the flats using stick shad 114sk’s, we started with these but soon noticed a heap of bait a little wider. We loaded the big guns and deployed our stick bait missiles into the chaos. Half way through the retrieve and we had 15kilo Spanish hitting our lures and traveling out the water like intercontinental warheads. No hookups just incredible fun. In amongst the chaos Justin got owned by a really decent GT. Eventually I hooked up to an awesome 150cm Spanish on my assist hook off the nose of my popper. With screaming reels and much jubilation we landed it. My PB on popper.
We fished the flats pulling out some good smaller trout and other species, and popped one or two other areas where we had some huge bow wave strikes from some monster gts.
At 16:40 we pulled the pin. And cruised back in the glassed out conditions.
Will fill u guys in on a mental jigging session. In the near future. Tight lines..
