During the stinking hot summer months, leading up to Christmas we get tunnel vision for impoundment barra, this season slowly turns into runoff Barra during the wet season and molds into Wild Sooty Grunter and mundi action while the upper reaches of the creeks are flowing well, with the odd Island trip and Reef trip on purler weekends.
There is however one constant on the Northern East coast of Queensland (besides wind) and that is the option of catching So0ties.
The Local tournament scene is slowly gaining more interest and is an awesome way to learn new tactics, sharpen skills and generally have a really good weekend with like minded people. During the warmer summer months a number of tournaments are held on the various impoundments with Mundi’s being the target species. During winter however, the tournament scene focuses on Sooty Grunter.
We have been attending a few of the Mackay Tournament Anglers Sooty Grunter comps and have had great fun – A great fun tournament scene.
These fish are odd and fun, which makes them an interesting challenge. The big guys generally reside in the bigger Trees in 80ft of water and any fish in the impoundments over the 2kilo mark is quality, and give a good account for themselves.
The Two main rods i use at present are the OBS67m 6-12lb and the OBC610m 10 -17lb. Now some would think that the 10-17lb is a bit heavy, personally this rod has amazing sensitivity and coupled with a good quality bait caster you can feel your vibes pounding away perfectly. It is also a long casting rod – great for punching long cast and covering two or three carrot tops in one cast. Now 10-17 you say, well when you cast and hook a fish on the opposite side of a tree and its a kicker. You really need to horse these fish in, as they really good at tangling you up in the sticks. This rod has awesome power for this. Losing a fish in a tournament plays with your mind, so going that little bit heavier certainly helps to get her out the tricky stuff.
The 6-12lb I use as my general all round Sooty Rod. Great for Vibes, Plastics and super Long Casts. This punches above its fighting weight once loaded its for this reason, coupled with its great sensitivity that I like it a lot – actually love it.
Anyways Round 4 of the Sooty Comps are coming in a few weeks time. So hopefully get onto a few cracker fish. Cant wait to try out some of the new Range on these guys once they get released.
Tight Lines and Smoking Drags.
